Documenting while I remember

When I was a kid collecting comic books, I remember the thrill of meeting actual comic book artists when they came to a comic shop to do a signing and draw sketches. I remember owning a few sketches from different artists:

I had no idea who he was. I was just cowed to meet an actual comic  book artist. I didn't read Green Lantern at the time. But I think Frank the comic shop guy said he drew GL, so I threw that out there when he asked if I wanted a sketch. He was a very nice guy who threw together a Hal Jordan torso piece in a few moments. It was such a great impression for me when I was 11 or 12.

Note: the image in the link is soooo familiar to me. I think that was one of the sketches he drew while I was in the shop that day. The dedication to Jim fits spot on with another kid collector in North beach. I checked out the person who posted the artwork, and I can't be for certain if it was the same kid as before. It's only been 30 years.

Bill was the first "hot shit" artist I had met in person. He was small in stature, but I was a comic speculator at the time and thought he would become an artistic giant. He just finished a run on Moonknight doing Neal Adams knockoff work. I just went ga-ga over the detail and musculature in those books. When Bill came to town, he just signed on as the new artist on New Mutants. The books were not even on the stands yet. All we had to see were photocopies of the pages. I dont know why, but I asked for and paid for a sketch of Wolfsbane.

My memory of the artwork is as follows: two figures. First, wolfsbane as a small 12-13 year old girl in a leotard. Hair short cropped, signature look. Second figure, crouching Wolfsbane in her werewolf form. Crazy stylized head that probably came from character studies of Wolverine or just plain wolf heads in general.

Before he became "Jackson Guice", he started off in Micronauts, a comic book far better than the toys that inspired it. When he stopped in the store that day, I just heard he did a fill in issue for Thor, so I asked for a thor sketch. I think he had Thor balancing Mjlonir on his palm with a playful look on his face. This piece, I dont have a strong memory of. I just remember having it in my collection, but all of that is long gone now. I think all the artwork disappeared when my mother gave away my vinyl collection. I don't remember seeing those pieces again after leaving home for college.

Final bits of sentimentality.

Looking at Perez's prices, I guess I didnt realize how rich I was for even having any comic sketches to begin with.

Blows my mind. $900 for a convention sketch on eBay.
